St. Hildegard of Bingen was a 12th century nun reknowned for her prophetic visions. A talented poet and composer, Hildegard composed beautifully melismatic chants to accompany her lyric poems. She also wrote treatises on medicine and the natural sciences. As one of the few prominent women in medieval history, Hildegard gained great notoriety in the late 20th century. Her chants in particular have been recorded by several prominent vocal ensembles. At Vespers, our St. Peter Schola will be singing her Responsory "O vis eternitatis." In 2012, Pope Benedict declared Hildegard a Saint, and designated her to be a Doctor of the Church. St. Hildegard is the patron saint for musicians and writers.
